DETROIT-NATIVE ASMAA WALTON FOUNDED THE BLACK ART LIBRARY IN FEBRUARY 2020 Growing up with family in the field, Detroit-native Asmaa Walton was always surrounded by art, spending time in the DIA while her mother worked. That’s Black visual art and anything in that realm,” says Black Art Library founder Asmaa Walton, a Detroit native and arts educator. Browsing online libraries and buying literary works that centered on Black visual arts and artists led to Walton creating an Instagram account dedicated to the titles she collected. With a background in arts education, including fellowships at the Toledo Museum of Art and St. Louis Art Museum, founder Asmaa Walton began collecting Black art texts in late 2019 as a way of creating a resource for community education. “The lenses that we are used to consuming art history through have to be refocused,” she tells me. Walton recently ran a popup exhibition of the Black Art Library in Highland Park, which served as a gathering space for Black artists. Asmaa Walton has been named the first KeyBank Museum Fellow at the Toledo Museum of Art. Walton, who recently completed her master’s degree in art politics from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, is from Detroit. The KeyBank Museum Fellowship at the Toledo Museum of Art was established in 2014 to promote and develop diversity in the museum industry.
